VFR Flight Following Explained: How to Request It and What ATC Provides

VFR flight following is one of the most useful services available to general aviation pilots, but it is also one of the easiest to misunderstand. A pilot flying under visual flight rules can ask air traffic control to keep the aircraft identified on radar and provide traffic information and other assistance while the pilot continues navigating the flight.

That can be valuable on a cross-country, near busy airspace, or simply when another set of eyes on traffic would be welcome. But flight following is not an IFR clearance, it does not make ATC responsible for navigating the airplane, and it does not remove the pilot’s responsibility to remain VFR and see and avoid other aircraft.

The FAA calls the underlying service radar flight following and VFR radar advisory service. Here is what that actually means, what controllers may provide, and how a VFR pilot can request it.

Quick Answer: What Is VFR Flight Following?

VFR flight following is an ATC radar service for a VFR aircraft that has been identified by a controller. The pilot continues to provide primary navigation while ATC may provide traffic advisories, safety alerts, limited radar vectors, and other assistance within the limits of radar coverage, communications, traffic, and controller workload.

Under basic VFR radar service, flight following does not mean ATC is providing standard radar separation between your aircraft and all other traffic. The pilot remains responsible for VFR weather requirements, terrain and obstruction clearance, and seeing and avoiding other aircraft.

Flight following is also separate from a VFR flight plan. Pilots can use both because they serve different purposes.

What Does “Flight Following” Actually Mean?

The FAA’s Pilot/Controller Glossary defines radar flight following as the observation of a radar-identified aircraft while the pilot provides the aircraft’s primary navigation. In practical terms, the controller associates your aircraft identification with a target on the controller’s display and follows your progress while providing whatever applicable radar services are available.

This distinction matters. You are still flying your route, maintaining appropriate VFR conditions, watching terrain, and looking outside for traffic. ATC has not taken over navigation simply because the controller says “radar contact.”

The FAA’s Aeronautical Information Manual, Chapter 4, describes both radar traffic information service and the basic radar services available to VFR aircraft.

What Services Can ATC Provide to a VFR Aircraft?

The exact service depends on where you are flying, the type of airspace, radar and radio coverage, traffic conditions, and controller workload. Under the FAA’s basic terminal radar service for VFR aircraft, the core services include safety alerts, traffic advisories, limited radar vectoring when available, and sequencing at locations where procedures have been established.

Traffic Advisories

Traffic advisories are probably the part of flight following most pilots notice. If a controller observes traffic that may pass close enough to your intended flight path to warrant attention, the controller can call that traffic using information such as its relative position, direction of movement, distance, altitude when known, and aircraft type when known.

The purpose is to help you find the aircraft visually and make an informed decision. It is not a replacement for your own traffic scan.

That distinction is backed by regulation as well as FAA guidance. Under 14 CFR § 91.113, when weather conditions permit, a person operating an aircraft must maintain vigilance to see and avoid other aircraft. Receiving a traffic advisory from ATC does not transfer that responsibility to the controller.

Safety Alerts

Controllers issue safety alerts when they become aware of a situation that, in their judgment, places an aircraft in unsafe proximity to terrain, obstructions, or another aircraft. These alerts are an important part of ATC service, but pilots should not treat radar service as a substitute for terrain awareness, obstacle clearance, traffic scanning, or sound preflight and in-flight decision-making.

Limited Radar Vectors

A pilot receiving VFR radar advisory service may request a vector to assist with avoiding observed traffic. ATC may also suggest a vector in appropriate circumstances.

For a VFR pilot, however, a vector does not make weather, terrain, or regulatory responsibilities disappear. If complying with a heading or other ATC instruction would create a problem with weather, terrain, obstacles, or another safety consideration, tell the controller promptly.

Sequencing in Some Terminal Areas

At certain locations, VFR radar services can also include sequencing. The exact service changes with the airspace and local procedures. Class B, Class C, and Terminal Radar Service Area operations can include services beyond ordinary basic VFR radar advisories.

That is why “I’m on flight following” should never be used as shorthand for assuming that the same separation service applies everywhere.

What VFR Flight Following Does Not Do

Understanding the limitations is at least as important as understanding the benefits.

It Does Not Turn a VFR Flight Into an IFR Flight

Flight following is not an IFR clearance. Unless some separate clearance, instruction, or airspace requirement applies, the pilot is still operating under VFR and is responsible for maintaining the applicable VFR requirements.

It Does Not Guarantee Standard Radar Separation

Under basic radar service, the FAA specifically distinguishes traffic advisories from standard radar separation. A controller can tell you about observed traffic and may provide assistance, but a VFR pilot should not assume that every aircraft on the scope is being kept a prescribed radar distance away.

Different rules apply to services within Class B, Class C, and TRSA environments, so pilots need to understand the airspace they are actually operating in.

It Does Not Replace See and Avoid

The airplane remains yours to fly. Flight following does not relieve the pilot of responsibility for seeing and avoiding other aircraft in visual conditions, maintaining appropriate terrain and obstruction clearance, avoiding serious wake encounters, or remaining in weather conditions that meet the applicable VFR minimums.

Flight following works best when you treat ATC as another set of eyes, not as a transfer of responsibility.

It Is Not Permission to Enter Every Kind of Airspace

Being in radar contact is not, by itself, a blanket authorization to enter regulated airspace. For example, the FAA notes that the requirement for an ATC clearance before entering Class B airspace and the two-way radio communication requirement associated with Class C operations still apply.

In other words, listen carefully to what ATC actually says rather than assuming that “radar contact” means every airspace requirement ahead has been satisfied.

It Is Not the Same as a VFR Flight Plan

This is an especially important distinction for cross-country pilots.

Flight following is an air traffic service. An activated VFR flight plan serves a different purpose by documenting the intended flight and supporting the search-and-rescue process if the aircraft becomes overdue.

The FAA has specifically cautioned pilots not to treat those two services as interchangeable. A pilot can use flight following and an activated VFR flight plan on the same trip because they address different needs.

How Do You Request VFR Flight Following?

The radio call does not need to be mysterious. FAA communication guidance favors concise transmissions that give the controller the information needed to understand the request without unnecessarily tying up the frequency.

Requesting Flight Following Before Departure

At a towered airport with the appropriate radar services, a departing VFR pilot may be able to request radar traffic advisories through ground control or clearance delivery. FAA guidance encourages departing VFR pilots who want radar traffic information to make the request and state their proposed direction of flight.

Local procedures vary, so pilots should use current airport information and follow instructions from the facility they are working with.

Requesting Flight Following After You Are Airborne

If you are already airborne, contact the appropriate approach control, departure control, or Air Route Traffic Control Center frequency for your location.

For an initial call, the FAA’s contact procedures call for the facility name, your full aircraft identification, and a short statement of the request when practical. A simple first transmission might look like this:

“[Facility] Approach, Skyhawk One Two Three Alpha Bravo, VFR request.”

Once the controller responds, be ready to provide the information needed to establish service. Depending on the situation, that can include:

  • aircraft identification
  • aircraft type
  • present position
  • altitude
  • destination
  • proposed route or direction of flight

A practical follow-up format could be:

“Skyhawk One Two Three Alpha Bravo, [position], three thousand five hundred, VFR to [destination], request flight following.”

That is an illustrative format rather than a mandatory script. Controllers may ask for additional information, and local circumstances can change the exchange.

A Note for Student Pilots

The FAA recommends that student pilots identify themselves as a student pilot on initial contact when they want the additional consideration that can help while gaining experience in busy airspace.

That is an FAA recommendation, not a separate requirement to use flight following. It simply gives the controller useful context.

What Happens After ATC Accepts Your Request?

If ATC can provide the service, the controller will normally identify the aircraft using surveillance information. You may be assigned a discrete transponder code and will hear confirmation when radar contact has been established.

Monitor the Assigned Frequency

Once receiving VFR radar advisory service, FAA guidance says pilots should monitor the assigned frequency. That allows the controller to issue traffic information, safety alerts, frequency changes, or other relevant instructions and advisories.

If another controller takes over as the flight progresses, ATC may issue a new frequency. Listen to the full transmission, read back or acknowledge as appropriate, and make the frequency change.

Keep ATC Informed About Relevant Changes

The FAA AIM advises pilots receiving VFR radar advisory service to inform the controller when changing VFR cruising altitude. This is not the same as saying that every altitude change under basic flight following requires an IFR-style clearance. It means the controller needs an accurate picture of what the aircraft is doing if the radar advisory service is going to remain useful.

If ATC has issued an actual instruction, or if you are operating under procedures where an assigned altitude applies, treat that instruction according to the applicable rules and request a change if necessary.

What If ATC Says “Unable”?

A request for VFR flight following is not a guarantee that the service will be available.

The FAA lists several factors that can limit radar advisory service, including radar limitations, traffic volume, controller workload, communications congestion, and coverage. Controllers have discretion to determine whether they can provide or continue the service.

If ATC cannot accept the request, continue the flight under the rules and responsibilities that already applied to your VFR operation. Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to try again later with another facility or after workload changes.

This is one reason flight following should be considered an additional service rather than something a pilot’s basic plan depends on having.

How Does Flight Following End?

In many en route situations, ATC will tell the pilot when radar service is terminated. There are also circumstances in which radar service to an arriving VFR aircraft ends automatically, such as when the pilot is instructed to change to an appropriate tower or advisory frequency.

If you no longer want the advisory service before ATC terminates it, FAA guidance says to advise the controller before changing frequencies. When applicable, return the transponder to the appropriate VFR code after the service ends unless ATC has instructed otherwise.

Do not simply disappear from an assigned ATC frequency while receiving radar advisory service.

Is VFR Flight Following Required?

There is no general requirement that every Part 91 VFR flight request flight following. It is an advisory radar service that VFR pilots can request when available.

That does not eliminate separate requirements associated with particular airspace. A Class B clearance, required two-way communications, transponder and ADS-B requirements, or other operating rules still apply where the regulations say they apply.

This is an important distinction between regulation and good operating practice. The see-and-avoid obligation is regulatory. Using flight following on a routine VFR cross-country is often a useful pilot practice, but the advisory service itself is not a substitute for complying with the regulations that govern the flight.

When Is Flight Following Especially Useful?

There is no single flight where every pilot must make the same choice, but flight following can be particularly useful when:

  • crossing areas with significant traffic activity
  • flying a longer VFR cross-country
  • operating near complex terminal airspace
  • flying through unfamiliar areas
  • building radio experience as a newer pilot
  • you simply want available ATC traffic advisories as another layer of situational awareness

The service can also make communication with the ATC system feel much more routine. What initially sounds intimidating to a student pilot often becomes just another normal part of a cross-country once the basic call format, handoffs, traffic advisories, and transponder changes are familiar.

The important habit is to keep the hierarchy straight: fly the airplane, remain legal and VFR, maintain your own situational awareness, and use ATC assistance for what it is designed to provide.
